The Mistake Everyone Makes

A 35pt holder is not for a 35pt card. The rating describes the holder’s inner opening, not the card. A standard modern base card is closer to 20pt; the extra fifteen points leave room for a penny sleeve and a little air.

Your card must always be thinner than the rating. Force a Chrome or Optic card into 35pt and you will round the corners on insertion, which is exactly the damage graders punish hardest. And remember the sleeve: a penny sleeve adds about four points.

One more trap. Thick holders do not fit standard storage boxes, and nine-pocket binder pages stop working properly beyond roughly 35pt. Sizing up protects the card and creates a storage problem at the same time.

The questions that come up in every supplies aisle.

What does PT mean on a toploader?
PT stands for point, and one point is one thousandth of an inch. So 1,000 pt equals one inch, or 25.4 mm. A 35pt toploader has an inner opening of 0.035 inches, which is 0.889 mm.
Is a 35pt toploader for a 35pt card?
No, and this is the single most common mistake. The PT rating describes the holder's opening, not the card. A standard modern base card is closer to 20pt; the 35pt holder leaves room for the card, a penny sleeve and a little air. Your card must always be thinner than the holder's rating.
What size holder does a Chrome, Prizm or Optic card need?
55pt. Chromium stock is noticeably thicker than paper base stock, and forcing it into a 35pt holder damages the corners on the way in. Paper base cards and all standard TCG cards fit 35pt.
What size holder does a patch or relic card need?
It depends on the swatch. A thin single-colour jersey swatch usually fits 100pt. A multi-colour or thicker patch wants 130pt. A jumbo or logoman patch needs 180pt. Patch thickness varies wildly even inside one product, so when in doubt, size up.
How do I measure a card without calipers?
Stack ten identical base cards, measure the stack in inches and divide by ten. A 0.20 inch stack over ten cards is 0.020 inches per card, which is 20pt. Or use a step gauge, which gives you the answer in one motion without any arithmetic.
Does a penny sleeve change the size I need?
Yes. A penny sleeve adds roughly 4pt. It is worth it anyway: always sleeve a card before it goes into a holder, or the surface will scratch and the card can stick to the plastic over time. Use standard penny sleeves up to 75pt and thick sleeves beyond that.
Will thick cards fit in a nine-pocket binder page?
Only up to about 35pt. Beyond that, standard pages stretch and the cards bow. Thick cards belong in toploaders or magnetic holders, and thick holders will not fit standard storage boxes either — they need boxes made for graded cards.
